Tough walk down from the airport in a remote area in the wild trout section, a few miles below hangman's bridge. I would not recommend it as the trail was difficult to follow and I nearly got lost on the way back up the steep canyon. The fishing was ok. I thought there would be more fish but it seemed that the fish population was sparse and concentrated in the deeper pools. The sections in between seemed devoid of fish--maybe earlier in the season these spots held more fish. A very remote feeling being down there in the canyon and miles from any road or buildings. Got a double! There were thunderstorms nearby, but luckily I didn't get rained on much. I almost left before I hooked into this very nice rainbow, ~18". Glad I decided to fish one more pool before heading out. Unfortunately I didn't fish long because of the storms and felt like I was hiking more than fishing.
Ran into some random dude who seemed somewhat lost. I tried to help in what direction to get out of the canyon, but I was almost as lost as he. I had a feeling those deeper pools harbored some big dogs and it wouldn't surprise me if there were some much larger fish lurking in this section.

Strange day fishing the East Carson in the middle section. The middle is from Hangman's bridge near Markleeville, CA to the next bridge upstream from there. Normally this section is heavily stocked, or at least in the section I was fishing just upstream from Hangman's. Except for one wild rainbow, all I caught were what I think were Paiute Cutthroat or maybe Lahontan Cutthroat which were probably hatchery fingerlings from earlier this spring. Only fished here for about 2 hours. I was Euro nymphing and caught almost all the fish on a pattern I haven't used in ages--the Rainbow Warrior. It was good practice for detecting light takes and the scenery was amazing. The one rainbow for the day. Might have been a hatchery that had been in the river for a while or was wild. Put up a great fight for its size. If they put some catch and release regulations in this section and continue to plant Paiute or Lahontan Cutthroat, that would be awesome and I would be greatly anticipating fishing this section next year if that is the case. Not sure what is going on in this part of the river though as I haven't fished it in years.
I tried to go further upstream to fish near the second bridge but there was some bike race going on and they had the road closed. I ended up heading to the wild trout section below Hangman's and will post that video next week. Decent fishing down there but I don't know if it was worth the hike to get in there. Almost got lost in the woods as well as there was no real trail down there from the airport. Ran into some random dude that seemed lost and later thunderstorms came in.. just an all around strange day. Fished the Middle Fork Feather after hiking downstream for about 2 miles in the remote canyon (near Quincy). Great fishing, but man, I don't think I can fish that stretch again. Trying to walk along the bank was extremely difficult most of the time and I had to climb over some rock outcroppings a few times. The canyon also has a lot of rattlesnakes, though luckily I didn't see any. But if felt good to knock off this river from my CA/NV list as I had been wanting to fish it for quite some time. Beautiful wild rainbows that fought very hard. The Middle Fork straddles the transition between the Sierras and the Cascade mountains. A lot of volcanic rocks along the bank. Saw three different stoneflies: Salmon, Golden, & Midnight--however I didn't see any hatching, just came across a few along the bank. I bet the bigger fish come out towards dusk to feed on them. In Fact, as it was starting to get dark, I had what I think was a large fish break me off, but I couldn't tell how big. It could have been just a 16" fish that broke on a poorly tied dropper connection. That green vegetation along the bank was the worst. I had to bushwhack it with my net, and there were spiders all over them. You couldn't see where you steeped because of it unless you cut it down. Was using a 15' Euro or French leader and switched back and forth between tight lining and indicator nymphing. The #16 Frenchie caught almost all the fish, until later when it got darker, the fish switched to the #8 Rubber Legs.
