Mid October on the Big Lost River in Idaho, out in the middle of nowhere, I had the river to myself. Had the cruise control at 95 mph on the way there. Water was very cold at 41 degrees in the morning, and later 46 degrees in the afternoon. Started out right below the dam near Mackay, and worked my way downstream. Not very easy to walk the river bank, had to walk downstream in the river in many spots. Flows were down to their normal late fall/winter levels, but I could not imagine trying to fish it at higher flows. Saw some large fish in the large deep pool right below the outflow from the dam. I saw some fish at the tailout and was able to drift my indicator over them. Hooked into a good sized fish, guessing around 18" but he dove into the rocks and got the hook out. I was "walking the dog" with the indicator when he struck. Very enjoyable day. Had the river to myself. Would love to fish the upper river during the summer. I tried to fish it later on and the water was way too cold.
