Strange day fishing the East Carson in the middle section. The middle is from Hangman's bridge near Markleeville, CA to the next bridge upstream from there. Normally this section is heavily stocked, or at least in the section I was fishing just upstream from Hangman's. Except for one wild rainbow, all I caught were what I think were Paiute Cutthroat or maybe Lahontan Cutthroat which were probably hatchery fingerlings from earlier this spring. Only fished here for about 2 hours. I was Euro nymphing and caught almost all the fish on a pattern I haven't used in ages--the Rainbow Warrior. It was good practice for detecting light takes and the scenery was amazing. The one rainbow for the day. Might have been a hatchery that had been in the river for a while or was wild. Put up a great fight for its size. If they put some catch and release regulations in this section and continue to plant Paiute or Lahontan Cutthroat, that would be awesome and I would be greatly anticipating fishing this section next year if that is the case. Not sure what is going on in this part of the river though as I haven't fished it in years.
I tried to go further upstream to fish near the second bridge but there was some bike race going on and they had the road closed. I ended up heading to the wild trout section below Hangman's and will post that video next week. Decent fishing down there but I don't know if it was worth the hike to get in there. Almost got lost in the woods as well as there was no real trail down there from the airport. Ran into some random dude that seemed lost and later thunderstorms came in.. just an all around strange day.

Why not walk in from Hangman's bridge rather than airport? Nice trail.

Agreed-next time I would use the trail from Hangman's! Prior to my trip I was looking at google maps and the airport and it seemed not to bad... wrong.

Hi PD, Thanks for the videos! I have fished the ECR since I was a kid, but it has been a while and I am now taking my better half for a weekend of fishing along the Carson. I have never fished the river in May, and I am worried we are smack dab in the middle of heavy river flow and won't have any luck. Any recommendations for fishing in May on the ECR with fast water? I am definitely not an expert by any means, so any advice is better than none. Thanks!

Hi Brenton, If I were you, I would wait on fishing the East Carson till late June or into July this year. The river will be above 1000 cfs for awhile with all the snow melt. I think the levels for good fishing on the EC are when they hit around 400 cfs and below. If you are fishing the stocked section (in between the two bridges above Markleeville--Hangman's upstream to near the silver creek area) try to time when they have recently stocked the river, by checking on the Alpine County facebook page.

I know this is an old post but there is a nice trail from the airport down to the river. About halfway down it turns into an old riverbed. It Puts you right about a few miles downstream from hangman’s. It took me 40 minutes to get down from the airport well worth it.

Thanks Tony. I have taken that trail from the airport before--gets you into the backcountry very nicely.
