Have never tried fishing Downtown Reno, but had always wanted to give it a try for a long time. I finally made it happen and had a decent day. I consider the downtown Reno area the river between Cottonwood Park to roughly Idlewild Park. Saw a decent amount of caddis in the bushes, but decided to go with a rubber legs and mop fly combo. The fish populations are on the low side but there can be some big fish in this section of river so I wanted to present some larger food items. The mop fly is a great cranefly larva pattern and there are a lot of craneflys in this section of river. A bike/walk trail follows the river but it if filled with homeless & their tents. They seemed harmless but you never know if they happen to be on drugs or desperate for them. I probably won't fish this particular section because of that in the future (section close to the skyscrapers). Within ~10 mins I hooked into a very nice brown trout of ~20" but he came off after doing an uncharacteristic jump to spit the hook out. Very nice trout water with lots of nice runs and pocket water. Hard to believe this is right through a medium sized city like Reno. Saw lots of baby trout in the shallows and it is good to see the river recovering back to its pre-drought form. In another 2 years this river will be amazing again like it was pre-drought (it was insanely good). A very enjoyable day especially considering it took me just a ten min drive. Ended up with a nice 18" rainbow towards the end. The fishing directly beneath the skyscrapers and casinos wasn't too good due to the lack of holding water (too shallow).
